The name “Blakely” was a family-owned business with gas stations across Arizona, in Blythe, California, and I was told, in western New Mexico. The company started back in the late 1940s and was in existence until the late 1960s. Today, Blakely glasses and dinnerware are treasured by many collectors of vintage Arizona memorabilia.
As a kid back in the sixties, I can remember some of the things I grew up with that I now see at my current job as a manager of a large antique mall. One item that I see people still avidly collect is Blakely glass and dinnerware. The outings I took with my parents to the gas stations here in Arizona just so Mom could get the latest collectible of Blakely dinnerware and glasses.
Blakely gas stations back in the 50s and 60s offered various promotions. Customers would purchase gas to receive the latest collectible glass or plate being offered as a premium. Glasses came in frosted and clear-glass versions. The dinnerware, as well as assorted accessory pieces, was available in cream-colored stoneware and silver-rimmed china and could be obtained by redeeming Cactus Coupons at the stations. Stamps were earned in a rewards program, much like the once-popular S&H Green Stamps. Items in the series ranged from juice glasses and tumblers to pitchers, cereal bowls, platters, decanters and cups and saucers.
