Reproduction powder flasks abound, and in this video, Ski discusses how to tell the difference between these newer ones and the real antiques. The antique powder flasks were used for shotguns, rifles, and pistols, and the size of the flasks is a clue to which firearm it was associated with.
Some of the most common designs were: oak leaf, shell, hunting scenes with dogs, horses, and patriotic scenes. Some of the most interesting vintage powder flask designs are embossed. Often there are makers’ marks and sometimes the name of an owner. Some are made of copper, some brass, and some are leather-covered.
